You know what they say: invest in experiences, not material things. With numerous studies and articles reminding us that travel is essential to one’s existence, here’s another one to remind you how you can turn your travels into something more enriching than your Instagram shots.

Push your personal limit

bungee jumping

Travel is the perfect time to go beyond your comfort zone. Do something you otherwise wouldn’t do at home: hike a mountain, attend a cooking class, try bungee jumping. You can also choose a non-English speaking destination, where you’ll resort to learning the basics of the local dialect; or eat a local delicacy you can’t find anywhere else. Whichever new activity or destination you choose, you’ll come home a better, wiser version of yourself.

Splurge on something fancy

laduree

It’s not every day that you wake up to the excitement of discovering a new place, so why not go all out and treat yourself to something fancy? It doesn’t have to be an eight course meal at that uber-expensive Michelin-starred restaurant, it can even be a small luxury like snacking on a Laduree macaron while wandering Parisian streets.

Travel solo

solo travel

Most travelers avoid solo travel like a plague because they don’t like a lot of the factors that come with it: it’s stereotyped as not safe, you have no one to share the expenses with, you might get bored/lonely/lost. What they don’t know is that it’s actually the best time to grow as a traveler. You learn to be independent, creative and resourceful when you’re left to your own devices.

Try different types of accommodation

There was a time when all the accommodation option you had is staying a fancy hotel you can barely afford. These days, however, you have more picks to choose from – whether it’s the usual hotel, a charming bed and breakfast or even a quirky hostel, you’ll never know your preference til you try it.

Attend a special event or a festival

carnivale

Make it fun and memorable trip by timing your vacation with a special event or festival. Some festivals worth checking out around the world are Chinese New Year in Hong Kong, Carnivale in Rio, Coachella in California, Oktoberfest in Munich, and Yi Peng in Chiang Mai. If you’re into sporting events, you can also go for the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, both of which happens every four years.
